Ice Science Experiment: What Makes Ice Melt Fastest?

This cool science experiment shows how different variables impact how quickly ice melts.

Materials

Directions

Help your child pour the exact same amount of water into each jar.

Have her put the salt in one and sugar in the other. Use about two tablespoons.

Ask your child to predict which of the solutions will melt ice fastest and record her prediction.

Have your child drop the ice cube in the jars.

Set the timer and press go.

Time to stir all of the jars for a full minute. (You may need to help.)

After a little more than 9 minutes, the first ice cube should be completely dissolved. Did that happen? Was your child’s prediction right? Have her record her results.
